Respectful Relationships is a Victorian Government initiative that supports schools to build safe, inclusive and respectful learning environments. The program is grounded in evidence showing that social and emotional learning helps students build strong relationships, make positive choices and manage challenges with confidence. It also supports the prevention of gender-based violence by promoting fairness, equality and respect for all.

At Sunshine North Primary School, Respectful Relationships forms a key part of our wellbeing approach. It sits alongside SWPBS and helps us create a consistent, supportive culture for every student.

Every class at SNPS participates in one wellbeing lesson each week through the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) curriculum. The program follows a two-year cycle, allowing students to revisit and strengthen their understanding as they move through the school.

The RRRR curriculum focuses on eight key areas:

  • Emotional Literacy
  • Personal and Cultural Strengths
  • Positive Coping
  • Problem-Solving
  • Stress Management
  • Help-Seeking
  • Gender Norms and Stereotypes
  • Positive Gender Relationships

Through classroom discussions, collaborative activities, role-plays and real-life scenarios, students learn how to recognise and manage emotions, solve problems respectfully, seek help when needed and build positive relationships with others. Students also learn about inclusion, consent, personal safety and the importance of treating everyone with respect.

By teaching Respectful Relationships every week, we help students develop empathy, resilience, confidence and a strong sense of belonging. These lessons strengthen student wellbeing, support positive behaviour and help create a school environment where everyone feels safe, respected and valued.
