Shared responsibility, accountability and collaboration
Sunshine North Primary School is a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden school. This program centres around:
- pleasurable food education
- fostering positive food habits in children
- making learning about food fun, engaging, and hands-on
This approach emphasizes the importance of connecting with fresh, seasonal, delicious food through activities like gardening, cooking, and sharing meals.
Supported by the program mantra to grow, harvest, cook and share food enables students to:
- Connect with varied seasonal fresh produce, building positive food behaviours for life
- Develop and build confidence towards acquiring long life practical skills both in kitchen and garden settings (e.g. food preparation, knife skills and garden tool usage
- Reinforce learning in curriculum areas of English and mathematics and other cross curriculum priorities
- Build collaborative skills and use critical thinking through hands-on sensory experiences
- Experience increased sense of wellbeing through social connectedness with others
Expectations:
To support the Kitchen & Garden program all students are to:
- Follow safety rules when using both garden and kitchen tools
- Follow hygiene practices in the kitchen
- Have a go at eating unfamiliar vegetables and dishes
- Have a try at a range of tasks and responsibilities assigned in class
- Respecting and working collaboratively with other group members (including staff and volunteers)
