Kitchen & Garden
Shared responsibility, accountability and collaboration
In the year:
- Prep and Grade 1 and 2 students participate in three garden and kitchen classes both 60-minute in duration.
- Grade 3 and 4 students participate in a weekly 60-minute garden class and 90-minute kitchen class in semester 1.
- Grade 5 and 6 students participate in a weekly 60-minute garden class and 90-minute kitchen class in semester 2.
Supported by the program mantra to grow, harvest, cook and share food enables students to:
- Connect with varied seasonal fresh produce, building positive food behaviours for life.
- Develop and build confidence towards acquiring long life practical skills both in kitchen and garden settings (e.g. food preparation, knife skills and garden tool usage.)
- Reinforce their learning in curriculum areas of English and mathematics and other cross curriculum priorities.
- Build their teamwork skills and use critical thinking skills through hands-on sensory experiences.
- Experience increased sense of wellbeing through social connectedness with others and making accomplishments in both garden and kitchen environments.
Expectations:
To support the Kitchen & Garden program all students are to:
- Follow safety rules when using both garden and kitchen tools.
- Follow hygiene practices in the kitchen.
- Having a go at eating unfamiliar vegetables and dishes.
- Have a try at a range of tasks and responsibilities assigned in class.
- Respecting and working collaboratively with other group members (including staff and volunteers).
